By an agreement with France on December 31, 1786, the French living in Russia gave permission to open their churches with total freedom of worship granted aa French nationals in Russia under the grant of the perfect tolerance of all religions, can freely perform the duties of their religion, celebrate according to the ordinance, both in their homes and in their churches without having trouble meeting it.

On 24 November 1835, the French Church of St. Louis is consecrated by the dean of Moscow, Archbishop Igor Motchoulevski in the presence «of all city authorities».

Since the fall of communism in 1991, the church was returned to the French parish. A new priest, Father Bernard Léannec, was named after restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in Russia.

The Church of San Louis of the French is a symbol of Catholicism in Russia, and freedom and religious tolerance. She was successively visited by General de Gaulle in 1944 and 3 December 1964 by Konrad Adenauer, Lech Walesa and Jacques Chirac, and other political and religious figures.
